Chrysalis Support Services
A governance framework built around the organisation's purpose — so the board could govern well and the service could keep doing its work.
About this engagement
Governance is not measured in percentages. It is measured in whether the board can see clearly, decide well, and keep the service running.
Built on the ten principles BPS uses to define good governance.
The challenge
Where they were
Chrysalis Support Services is the leading agency in the Midwest for family and domestic violence and sexual assault support. Chrysalis House provides safe supported accommodation for women escaping family or domestic violence, or at risk of homelessness as a result of a crisis.
Work of that consequence carries obligations to funders, to members and above all to the people it serves. For a not-for-profit operating in an increasingly complex environment, governance is not administrative overhead — it is what holds the organisation steady and keeps the service running. The framework needed to align directly with the goals the organisation had set for itself.
What we did
- Conducted an internal review of the organisation's existing processes
- Developed a strategic plan to lift internal efficiency without adding administrative burden to front-line work
- Established clear guidelines for the Board, built on the ten principles BPS uses to define good governance
- Designed the framework around the organisation's own goals and the needs of the people it supports, rather than imposing a generic corporate model
The outcome
What changed
A single corporate governance plan now applies consistently across the organisation. The board is more effective, relationships with external stakeholders are stronger, and the organisation has the structure it needs to keep its focus where it belongs.
Measured results
- One corporate governance plan applied consistently across the organisation
- Board effectiveness materially improved
- Relationships with external stakeholders strengthened
