Stakeholder Engagement
Your business depends on people who don’t work for you — shareholders, regulators, funders, neighbours, Traditional Owners, community. Stakeholder engagement is the work of knowing who they are, what they need, and bringing them with you before a decision rather than defending it afterwards.
What stakeholder engagement is
Stakeholder engagement means identifying everyone whose support, tolerance or approval your business relies on, understanding what each of them actually wants, and building a way of communicating that earns trust rather than merely distributing information.
The practical value shows up in timing. Concerns that surface during consultation are manageable; the same concerns surfacing at approval, or in the media, are not. Engagement done properly moves the objection forward to a point where it can still change the plan.
This work increasingly carries an environmental, social and governance dimension. Rather than treating ESG as a reporting exercise, we run materiality assessments to establish which issues genuinely matter to your stakeholders and your business, so effort concentrates there instead of spreading across everything.
Who it’s for
You’ll recognise the situation if any of these apply.
Stakeholder concerns surface late and create avoidable friction.
You need to weigh environmental, social and governance issues but are unsure which matter most.
A project needs approval, consent or social licence you don’t yet have.
Disagreements between stakeholders are delaying progress.
A funder, regulator or grant body has asked for evidence of consultation.
Relationships are handled ad hoc and depend on one person’s memory.
You’re entering a new community, region or regulatory environment.
Communication happens when there is news, rather than to a plan.
How we run the engagement
Every engagement is scoped to your situation. These are the areas we typically cover.
- Identify and map your stakeholders, their influence and their expectations.
- Run materiality assessments to prioritise the ESG issues that matter most.
- Build communication plans that keep stakeholders engaged and informed.
- Establish consultation processes that produce a defensible record, not just a conversation.
- Facilitate difficult conversations and help resolve conflict through structured dialogue.
- Prepare the engagement evidence funders, regulators and grant bodies ask to see.
- Set up a register so commitments made to stakeholders are tracked and honoured.
- Advise on how and when to communicate difficult news, before it communicates itself.
What you get
The outcomes this service is measured by.
- A clear picture of who matters, how much, and why.
- Stronger, more trusting relationships with the people your business relies on.
- Fewer surprises, because concerns are surfaced and managed early.
- ESG effort concentrated where it counts rather than spread thin.
- A documented consultation record when someone asks for one.
- Better decisions that account for the perspectives that matter.
Why BPS
We treat engagement as a discipline with a record and a plan behind it, not a round of meetings — which is what makes it hold up when a regulator, funder or community group asks what you did. BPS is based in Perth and works with businesses across Western Australia.
